Frequently asked questions- Powders

Q/ Will the snow powder stay white?
A/ The snow powder will stay white and not turn yellow for instance. The only way that can happen will be if it was glued down, or coated in a material which itself changed colour. This is why we do not recommend PVA adhesives for instance.

Q/ What do I use to stick the powder?
A/ The most important thing is that you only use glues and adhesives that will not yellow with time. It is also important that you do not use thick glues that may hide the sparkle and crystalline structure of the Krycell snow powders. We supply adhesives, but they are not designed for items that will be handled, such as gaming boards and pieces.
If you want to stick the powder down for gaming pieces and boards then you should consider using water clear, acrylic lacquers which are designed so they are UV balanced and will not yellow with age

For scenic static work, water can be used as an adhesive when groundcover is required. The water can be applied first, or after to water the snow powder into ground materials like leaves, grasses and so-on. This really useful for railway use particularly as any overspray will not be full of an adhesive, which would play havoc with turnouts, contacts and track conductivity. Water will just evaporate harmlessly.
Q/How much powder do I need?
A/ A single packet of 150g Krycell Snow powder will cover an area 1 metre x 1 metre @ 2mm thick. Depending on what scale you are working at and how deep you want the snow effect, this coverage will vary.

Q/Can I mix Krycell snow powders with glues, resins and other materials to make my own custom effects?
A/You can mix our snow powders with anything you want to achieve many snow, ice and arctic effects. You are only limited by your imagination. Remember to only use materials that will not disclosure, or hide the crystal structure of the snow powders.

Q/What powder is best for my work? ULTRA, EXTRA or FINE snow powders?

A/ ULTRA has the largest particle size, but can work at any scales as long as work is not being scrutinised too much at scales below 1/35th. ULTRA is particularly useful at scales 1/35th all the way up to 1/6th scale. It has the same sparkle and refraction as EXTRA.

EXTRA is particularly suitable for all scales below 1/24th. Extra delivers a small scale snow powder, but with the sparkle of ULTRA. Some like seeing a more obvious snow sparkle at smaller scales so use it all the way down to 1/225th.

FINE is generally used on the smallest of models and at the tiniest of scales. The sparkle and reflection it has is not so obvious as with the other two powders. The scale amount of reflection and sparkle, plus with the small particle size make this the choice with those who seek absolute realism in the smallest scales of modelling. 1/35th down to 1/225th
FINE and EXTRA can be mixed together in the amounts you want to increase, or decrease the amount of sparkle for your project.
Frequently Asked questions- Water

Q/ How hard is the water resin, can it be polished.
A/ Our water resin sets to a firm rubber. However, it can not be polished. If you want to leave a section on a diorama exposed at one edge so you can see through the edge, that is possible. You simply block off the edge where you want the water exposed with highly polished thin plastic sheet.

When the water has set, you simply remove the card leaving the water exposed. This only suitable for dioramas and objects that are not going to be handled as the water will not be tough enough and might tear.
